Unlocking New Perspectives: A Humanist’s Insights from the Looking Beyond Online Conference

On Saturday, 28 June 2025, I had the opportunity to attend the online conference Looking Beyond, hosted by the Churches Fellowship for Psychical and Spiritual Studies. This event was particularly special as it marked the 50th anniversary of The Christian Parapsychologist journal. This publication has played a significant role in exploring the intersection of spirituality and parapsychology. As a humanist, I am always keen to learn about different beliefs, and this conference offered a unique lens through which to examine parapsychology from a Christian perspective.

The Churches Fellowship for Psychical and Spiritual Studies

The mission of the Churches Fellowship for Psychical and Spiritual Studies is to promote interaction and understanding between the fields of parapsychology and spirituality. By organising events such as Looking Beyond, the organisation hopes to provide a forum in which individuals can investigate the countless possibilities that exist outside the physical world. They are a significant force in the continuing discussion around the paranormal in a Christian setting due to their dedication to inclusion and open-mindedness.

The Christian Parapsychologist Journal

Founded in 1975, The Christian Parapsychologist journal has been at the forefront of research and discussion surrounding spirituality and anomalous phenomena. Over the past fifty years, it has published numerous articles that challenge conventional thinking and encourage exploration of the unseen dimensions of life. The journal’s anniversary celebration at this conference highlighted its continuing impact on both academic and spiritual communities.

The Host: Matt Arnold

The conference was led by Matt Arnold, editor of The Christian Parapsychologist. In addition to his role as editor, he is the author of The Invisible Dimension: Spirit-Beings, Ghosts, and the Afterlife and a researcher, writer, and lecturer on Christianity and the paranormal. His role was crucial in guiding the discussions and ensuring that each speaker’s insights were effectively communicated. Matt’s background in parapsychology and his passion for the subject shone through, making the event both engaging and informative.

Speaker Highlights

Alan Murdie: The Gospel Miracles in Light of Psychical Research

The opening talk of the conference came from Alan Murdie, chair of the Ghost Club and a council member of the Society for Psychical Research. Murdie is a barrister who has investigated various reports of hauntings and poltergeists in the UK and overseas. He writes and broadcasts widely, including a monthly column for Fortean Times.

Murdie’s opener was a thought-provoking talk on gospel miracles in light of psychical research. He argued that nothing about them is fundamentally contradictory, incompatible, or impossible in light of the data acquired since 1882. He explored how these ancient accounts can be understood through modern parapsychological frameworks, inviting attendees to consider the implications of faith and evidence in the study of the paranormal. His talk was a rollercoaster, taking us from the history of psychical research right through to modern parapsychology, even touching on contemporary quantum physics.

Christian J. Romer: The Discernment of Spirits: The Problem with Parapsychology

Next, Christian J. Romer, a paranormal researcher, former lecturer in religion, and former Chair of the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena, addressed the discernment of spirits and the challenges faced in parapsychology. CJ discussed how he believes parapsychology went wrong by solely examining the subject from a physicalist point of view, and how Christianity can help people understand it better. His insights into the scientific exploration of the unknown emphasised the importance of scepticism and critical thinking in the field, encouraging participants to approach their enquiries with both curiosity and caution.

Dr Mark Fox: Fifty Years On: Half a Century of NDEs

One of the highlights of the conference for me was Dr Mark Fox, who delivered a captivating presentation titled 50 Years On: Half a Century of NDEs. Dr Fox is a researcher, author, and lecturer who studies Fortean occurrences, near-death experiences (NDEs), and spiritual encounters. His work combines theological, neurological, and parapsychological perspectives. He is the author of Lightforms and Cold Inn, as well as a regular contributor to Fortean Times and The Christian Parapsychologist.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the term ‘Near-Death Experience’, and Dr Fox’s talk chronicled and evaluated many of the changes in the study of such experiences over that time: what we have learnt, what we have yet to learn, and where future research may lead us. He drew on a variety of NDE testimonies to reflect on his own growing understanding of them, particularly how he has come to see them through the lens of his Christian faith.

This talk resonated deeply with me, as I have experienced a few out-of-body experiences myself. Dr Fox’s exploration of NDEs revealed striking similarities to my own encounters, such as feelings of detachment from the body and altered perceptions of time and space. Listening to the stories of others who have undergone NDEs provided valuable insights into the nature of consciousness and what might lie beyond our physical existence. It also prompted me to reflect on the psychological and emotional effects of these profound experiences.

Matthew McGuire: Catharsis, Fotisis, Theosis: Christian Wisdom for Psychic Development

The first of two speakers from ‘over the pond’ in the USA was Matthew McGuire, who has a background in parapsychology and biblical studies. He discusses the relationship between parapsychology, spiritual experiences, and Christian theology in his writings and talks. In addition to writing for The Christian Parapsychologist, he is the author of A Magical World.

McGuire shared his insights on Christian wisdom for psychic development, focusing on concepts such as catharsis (the purification of the soul), fotisis (the enlightenment of the soul), and theosis (union with God). He led us through what the Christian wisdom tradition has to say regarding psychic gifts, which he maintains are latent abilities that humans are capable of. His talk encouraged attendees to consider how these spiritual principles can guide individuals in their exploration of the mystical and metaphysical realms, bridging the gap between faith and personal experience.

Jimmy Akin: Spirit Communication: A Fresh Appraisal

Finally, Jimmy Akin, the host of Jimmy Akin’s Mysterious World podcast, concluded the series of talks with a fresh appraisal of spirit communication. Akin’s work investigates the reasons behind the historical unease of many Christians regarding spirit communication techniques, including apparitions, automatic writing, mental mediumship, and spontaneous after-death contacts. His engaging presentation invited participants to reconsider the relevance of spirit communication in contemporary spiritual practices, emphasising the importance of understanding and interpreting these experiences within a modern context. His analysis, using biblical and theological perspectives, concluded that there is significantly more room for faithful Christians to engage in spirit communication than previously acknowledged.

Embracing Diverse Perspectives

Overall, the Looking Beyond conference was a remarkable experience for me as a humanist, packed with inspiring talks and engaging discussions. Each speaker brought their own unique perspective, which not only increased my understanding of parapsychology through a Christian lens but also led me to examine my own beliefs in this area. I found it particularly interesting to explore how spirituality and the paranormal can intersect with various worldviews. I wholeheartedly recommend this conference to individuals of all beliefs who are keen to learn more, as it encourages valuable insights and connections among people with diverse viewpoints. Exploring these themes is a journey well worth embarking on, and I feel fortunate to have had the chance to take part in such a fascinating event.

John Fraser is a Council member of the Society for Psychical Research and former Vice Chair for Investigations at the Ghost Club, the two oldest paranormal research groups in the UK. His studies have covered hypnotic regressions, vampire folklore, and conventional paranormal research.

Active in the field since the 1980s, John took part in long-running hypnotic regression experiments and later conducted research into supernatural events at Sandwood Bay. Since 2015, he has been investigating witness testimony related to paranormal activity at The Cage in St Osyth. He has also contributed to media discussions on the paranormal.

John Fraser’s book is part of the ‘Paranormal Perspectives’ series, which seeks to investigate what the paranormal means to a selection of writers from various backgrounds. Fraser explores paranormal phenomena under a unified theory, the theory of ‘one paranormal power’. He does this while detailing his personal journey into the paranormal, from his early sparks of interest as a youngster to his time as a seasoned researcher and Society for Psychical Research Council member. This book has appeal to paranormal believers and sceptics alike, as it is an engaging investigation that offers readers a unique blend of philosophical investigation and memoir.

A Journey Through the Unexplained

Fraser begins by explaining how it all began for him. At university, he studied philosophy and economics. He resigned from his position as an internal auditor and organised a road trip that included stops at several haunted places. He then discusses the important paranormal figures who have impacted him, like Guy Lyon Playfair and Harry Price.

Fraser then explores the nature of paranormal phenomena in chapter three, looking at hypnotic regression, ghosts, poltergeists, and other unexplained events, such as the encounter in Rendlesham Forest. Fraser concludes by discussing his theory of the “One Paranormal Power”, which proposes that there is a single underlying force that underlies all paranormal activity.

What Makes This Book Stand Out?

Fraser has a gift for balancing scepticism with an open mind, something that’s not always easy in the paranormal field. He doesn’t just present eerie encounters and theories; he challenges them, inviting readers to explore every possibility. Are poltergeists separate from ghosts, or could they be different manifestations of the same mysterious force? If there’s just one underlying paranormal power at work, what could it be? These are the kinds of questions Fraser poses, leaving you pondering long after you’ve turned the final page.

His writing style is conversational and immersive, making even the most complex theories easy to digest. Fraser’s account is well-written, thoroughly researched, and adopts an engaging and thought-provoking approach, employing great storytelling to make sure the book is not just informative but also entertaining and easy to read. Every chapter skillfully blends reflective analysis of paranormal phenomena along with personal tales.

One of the most interesting aspects of the book for me is Fraser’s recounting of his initial plunge into the paranormal field, in which he gives vivid accounts of his early experiences. Here, he describes the events and encounters that sparked his interest in the unexplained. These explanations are complemented by his comments on mentors and role models who had a significant impact on his approach and knowledge.

Notably, Fraser honours well-known paranormal individuals such as Harry Price and Colin Wilson, whose pioneering work served as the foundation for his own investigations. I relished the narrative of his interactions with Peter Underwood, which demonstrated their genuine connection and friendship. This examination of his own influences gives readers an understanding of the intellectual heritage that informs his viewpoints.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Fraser’s book is how it subtly engages with the long-standing debate between psychological explanations and supernatural interpretations of paranormal phenomena. While he presents compelling cases for the existence of ghosts and poltergeists, he also acknowledges alternative explanations, such as environmental factors (electromagnetic fields, infrasound, or other environmental conditions), cognitive and neurological perspectives and parapsychological explanations (e.g., psychokinesis—particularly in relation to poltergeist activity).

This balanced approach makes the book appealing to both believers and sceptics. However, a deeper engagement with scientific and psychological studies on anomalous experiences would have added even more weight to his arguments.

Where the Book Could Go Further

While the book is packed with intriguing insights, some of the scientific explanations could go deeper. If you’re the type who loves diving into parapsychological research, you might find yourself wanting a bit more hard data and experimental analysis. Of course, there are many other books out there already that cover such aspects in more detail that the reader can seek out for further research if required.

If you’re new to the paranormal field, this book is an excellent gateway. Fraser keeps the tone inviting and avoids overwhelming jargon, making it easy to follow even if you’ve never read a book on the subject before. For the seasoned enthusiasts, even if you’ve been delving into the paranormal for years, you’ll appreciate Fraser’s fresh take on long-standing debates. While some sections may feel like familiar ground, the way he ties different phenomena together offers new food for thought.

Final Verdict: A Must-Read for Paranormal Enthusiasts?

Fraser’s Paranormal Perspectives isn’t just a book—it’s an invitation to think, question, and explore. It challenges readers to reconsider what they believe, weigh the evidence, and entertain new possibilities. We’ll dive into the chilling reports of ghostly whispers and invisible hands that haunt this crypt. And yes, we’ll also discuss the tragic fire of June 2024 that destroyed several of these ancient remains.

The Ghostly Tale of Unrequited Love at Veremont House

In Shooter’s Hill, London, a once-grand residence named Veremont House held a dark and haunting secret. The house was believed to be the dwelling place of a vengeful female ghost, and even the renowned paranormal investigator Elliot O’Donnell had an unsettling encounter with the apparition. The tale dates back to the late 1800s and revolves around the tragic love story of Bertha Rungate and her ill-fated suitor, Philip.

The Unrequited Love

Bertha lived with her widowed mother in Veremont House. Her late father had been a City merchant and she was their only child. Bertha was doted on by her mother but was known as a selfish and wilful child to others. Mrs Rungate wanted Bertha to become educated and at the age of sixteen, she began engaging governesses to teach her. However, Bertha one by one drove each successive governess away with her behaviour. She much preferred promenading in the latest fashions and making eyes at handsome young men to studying with her governesses.

Few governesses lasted longer than 6 weeks. However, this changed when Jane Ducrot was finally appointed. Bertha and she quickly formed a close bond and the two were often seen walking in the park together when they were not in their lessons together.

After around six months of Jane Ducrot as governess, news came that there would be a family visitor.  Bertha’s cousin Philip Rungate was planning a visit. Bertha’s mother was delighted as she saw this as an opportunity to bring Philip and Bertha together romantically with a view to marriage. Bertha was also very excited and showed her governess affectionate letters she had received from Philip.

Once Philip arrived at Veremont House it was clear that it was now Jane Ducrot who had caught his eye, no longer Bertha. Bertha and her mother were dismayed and set about covertly watching Philip and Jane. Bertha soon managed to surprise Philip and her governess in the summer house meeting clandestinely and some days later she finally caught them kissing, This sent Bertha into a rage and Jane Ducrot was summoned to see Mrs Rungate and given her two weeks’ notice.

The day before Jane Ducrot was due to leave Veremont House, Bertha once again caught the two lovers together canoodling in the summer house. Bertha was advised by her mother not to confront them further, as Ducrot would be leaving for good the next day. However, later that day Philip announced he too would be returning him the following day, ending his stay with them.

Bertha Rungate was a woman consumed by unrequited love for Philip, who, much to her dismay, was enamoured with none other than Bertha’s own governess. Overwhelmed by jealousy and driven to a fevered fit, Bertha committed a heinous act that would shroud Veremont House in a sinister aura for years to come.

A Murderous Act

Bertha suspected that Philip had decided to leave to join his lover, Jane.  That evening, Philip was seen by a servant going into the back garden, with Bertha following him shortly after.  Around an hour and a half later, she was seen to return alone, looking pale and agitated. Philip did not return that night, did not come for his breakfast the next morning, and was never seen again. It is thought that in a moment of jealousy that bordered on madness, Bertha murdered Philip and concealed his lifeless body, some say in the basement and others in an abandoned well. Those who asked about the whereabouts of Philip were told of his love affair with Jane Ducrot and it was explained away that he had run away to be with her.

However, the walls of Veremont House would soon bear witness to the anguished echoes of Bertha’s desperate attempt to win the affection of her beloved.

A Ghostly Apparition

Following her own death, Bertha’s spirit was unable to find rest. Witnesses claimed to have encountered her ghost, and paranormal investigator Elliot O’Donnell himself shared a chilling account of his encounter in ‘The Midnight Hearse and More Ghosts’: “Down, down, down it came, until at last I could see it – a white, evil face surmounted by a mass of black hair. The eyes were the most alarming feature – large, dark, very lurid, very sinister – and they were fixed on mine with a mocking leer.”

O’Donnell’s Fateful Encounter

O’Donnell stayed one night in Veremont House where he had his eerie encounter with the apparition on the upper floor landing. He further detailed how Bertha’s spirit led him past the summer house to the very spot where she had disposed of Philip’s body in an abandoned and hidden well. The paranormal investigator described the malevolent presence, and the ghostly figure seemed to mock him with a disdainful gaze. The apparition’s dark eyes held the secrets of the tragic love story that had unfolded within the walls of Veremont House.

Rest in Peace

The tale took a turn when Philip’s remains were discovered, removed from the property, and granted a Christian burial. Strangely, once the departed lover was given a peaceful resting place, all sightings of Bertha’s ghost ceased. The once-haunted Veremont House regained a sense of calm as if the restless spirit had finally found solace in the resolution of the tragic love affair.

Veremont House, with its vanished suitor and the ghostly presence of Bertha Rungate, stands as a testament to the enduring power of love, jealousy, and the unresolved mysteries that may linger in old buildings. The tale of the angry female ghost of Shooter’s Hill is a haunting reminder of the tumultuous emotions that can transcend the boundaries between life and death, leaving an indelible mark on the places we call home.

A Paranormal Night of Discovery at The Mount Without, Bristol

Earlier this year I was lucky enough to secure tickets to a paranormal night of discovery event being held in the atmospheric venue that is ‘The Mount Without’. This was a two-part event hosted by the marvellous Dr Kate Cherrell. The first part of the event was an introduction to Victorian Spiritualism introduced by Kate and the second part of the event was a paranormal investigation, co-hosted by Kate and Jamaica Inn paranormal investigator Karin Beasant, giving attendees the chance to try their hand at experiments and contacting spirits from beyond the veil.

The Mount Without

Saint Michael the Archangel on the Mount Without is an impressive church standing proud on St Michael’s Hill, looking over the city of Bristol. The first church on this site was likely Norman and built in 1147 by Robert Fitzhamon, who is famed for also building Tewksbury Abbey. The church was originally built outside the city walls and was therefore known as “The Mount Without”. The original church was then rebuilt in 1460 and the clock tower you see now is from that period.

Over the years the city of Bristol slowly grew up and around the church, as St Michael’s Hill became more populated with merchants and other residents. By 1775-1777 the church became too small to take the growing congregation and so the main body of the church was demolished and rebuilt by local builder, Thomas Paty. Around this time new graves were also created in the crypt and tombstones reused as ‘under slabs’ for the new graves. As the living population of Bristol grew, so did the population of the dead interred at the Church.

During the second world war, the church was damaged twice during the Bristol Blitz. In 1940 a 1000lbs bomb fell within feet of the Church and in 1941 an incendiary device set the roof alight destroying it. The church was repaired and in use until 1999 but the congregation dwindled over the years and was finally closed by the diocese.

The church lay empty, until squatters moved in and set it ablaze in October 2016. The dramatic blaze took at least 15 fire engines and many firefighters to extinguish. I could see the smoke from the blaze billowing in the sky near my home not too far away.

In 2017 the diocese wanted to find a new use for the building and asked for design bids from businesses, philanthropists and entrepreneurs. The church was finally reclaimed as the creative venue and events space that we see now, where it hosts artists, music and holistic events. This wonderful gothic revival church has been a gathering place for the people of Bristol for over 900 years and looks set to continue with that legacy.

An Introduction to Victorian Spiritualism

The evening kicked off with the introduction to Victorian spiritualism talk by Dr Kate Cherrell. This was a fascinating, informative and entertaining talk introducing us to the strange world of Victorian spiritualism including its history and types of spirit contact made in the 19th century. This was brought to life with a slide show, props and Kate’s sharp humour. I personally enjoyed hearing about spirit trumpets, the Fox sisters of Hydesville and witnessing Kate’s ectoplasm demonstration.

Spirit trumpets for example, or ‘séance trumpets’, were metal cones placed in the centre of a table during a séance to amplify any sounds issuing forth from the spirit realm. Sometimes a spirit would speak through a medium, who would bring the trumpet to their mouth to speak through. What larks!

The Paranormal Investigation

The second half of the night was the paranormal investigation; a chance to have hands on experience of communing with the spirit world. This started off with investigator Karin explaining the various gadgets, devises and paraphernalia used in investigation; from EMF readers, spirit boxes and motion sensors to planchettes and Ouija boards.

We split up into two groups and my group started off in the crypt with some table tipping. I’d never tried table tipping before, so this was all new to me. Table tipping is a form of psychic phenomenon in which a table can tilt, rise, wobble or rotate by the contact of the fingertips of individuals. It is a form of séance where sitters place their fingertips on the table and the table move without conscious muscular force. By relating the tilts to the alphabet or yes/no directions it is said to become possible to receive messages from beyond the veil.

We stood around a tall thin table with our finger tips gently rested on the top while Kate called out questions. It appeared that a religious man took a particular interest in talking to me and Kate asked him questions about his life before death. The table tilted and wobbled in answer to her queries, indicating he was originally from the north, had come to Bristol and stayed her while his family went to the New World. It was unclear if he had worked at the church or had just been a member of the congregation.

After the table tipping, we moved on to conduct a séance. For this we sat around a table with a spirit box and EMF readers on top, with shadow sensors dotted around the room near us. A bible was placed on the table also and we linked hands as a member of the group read a passage out from Corinthians. The hope was that we could invoke the spirits of this holy building by reading passages from the bible, triggering one of the various sensors. There were some beeps and possible triggering of sensors, but nothing too striking for me to note during this séance.

Next up, we headed upstairs in to the Nave of the church where we tried the planchette without much activity. The hope was that we would see some automatic writing. We all placed our fingers on the planchette and asked the spirits to move the planchette across the board, bringing messages from the other side. There was a small amount of movement, but not much unfortunately.

Following this we tried the “Estes Method”. The Estes method is where an investigator wears a blind fold to limit visual stimulation and also wears noise cancelling headphones connected to a sprit box; a device that is used to scan through radio frequencies and it is believed to be a communication tool between the spirit realm and the world of the living.  While the investigator is listening to the spirit box, other members of the group call out to the spirits with questions. The blindfolded investigator will call out any ‘answers’ coming through the headphones from the spirit box.  The idea is that the sensory deprivation eliminates any stimuli that could influence the blindfolded investigator.

In our experiment we sat in a circle near the alter, all wearing blind folds. One person had the spirit box and headphones. One person sat in the centre of the room dressed in an old-fashioned dress near the shadow sensors. We called out questions and for the spirts to touch someone.  After this some other ladies took it in turns to wear the old-fashioned dresses and sit in the centre of the room with the spirit box and a pal of mine in vintage style clothes also took his turn. We called out questions and even religious phrases in Latin to try to call for messages from the spirits. A few words were called out by the person with the spirit box including “like music” and other refences to music a few times.

To finish off we all sat in a circle where the chairs were positioned with one seat inside the circle and the next out.  One person sat at the altar, while other members called out to the spirits to approach and communicate.  The lady at the alter felt a cold spot next to her and a shadow sensor went off ahead of it. She said she felt like a hand was resting on her head at one point. Was this the spirits coming close to her or psychological suggestion?

I noted that the questions asked to the spirits often led to the Reverend William Knight. The Reverend Knight was a long serving rector of the parish, serving for almost sixty years before retiring in 1875. He died 3 years later and was buried in the church crypt. Could this have been him placing reassuring hand on the young lady’s head? There is also the story that a male figure has been seen looking out of the door near nave in past. Could this be the Reverend keeping a watchful eye over his beloved church even after death?

All in all, this was a fascinating and enjoyable night; from the whistle stop introductory talk based around Victorian spiritualism, to the hands-on experience of trying out paranormal investigation techniques. For me there was not enough activity to indicate that the spirits of the dead lurk in ‘The Mount’, waiting to communicate with the living. However, this location is steeped in history and atmosphere, so no doubt further investigation could prove me wrong. Perhaps on a late-night walk home past the Mount, I too one day will spot a dark figure looking out from the nave as I pass by.

Victim Support Sponsored Ghost Hunt, January 2014- The Ancient Ram Inn, Gloucestershire

On 11th January 2014 members of Victim Support’s South West Victim Care Unit held a sponsored ‘ghost hunt’ at the Ancient Ram Inn in Wotton-Under-Edge, Gloucestershire.

The Ancient Ram Inn is considered one of Britain’s most haunted B&Bs and is reputedly haunted by at least twenty ghosts. It is claimed that it is so haunted it can no longer be used as a functioning B&B and instead opens its doors to budding ghost hunters.

Members of the South West Victim Care Unit challenged themselves to see how long they could last out in this creepy building. A Ouija Board was used in “the bar” and several vigils were conducted in “the bishop’s room”. There were a few strange occurrences in the bishop’s room, such as a candle stick falling over, tapping noises coming from the fireplace, a brass bed warmer swinging and banging over the fireplace, a door knob rattling when nobody was at the door and long scratching noises coming from the door.

Were these down to a pranksters or spirits of the dead? You can find out for yourself if you spend a night at the Ancient Ram Inn.

Despite finding no concrete evidence of the afterlife, all members of the South West Victim Care Unit enjoyed their spooky experience, which raised £775 for Victim Support.

Ross Castle Investigation November 2010

This investigation followed the regular format of walk arounds and vigils in individual rooms. However, this investigation was different in that the focus was on experimenting on a séance in the lower tower room.  The purpose was to communicate with spirits and a planchette and alphabet cards laid out on the table were used.

One concern of individuals taking part in this séance was that of safety. Therefore the member of the team; who had tried some controlled experiences or instructions in what it feels for spirits to come close; was chosen to lead the proceedings. The member of the team who has had experience of working in spiritual development circles explained that, just as with living people, not all spirits are friendly. Also, if the spirit in contact was murdered this may create strong unpleasant feelings among those who have not had such experiences with communicating with in the past. Therefore, those who were prepared to be ‘touched by spirit’ were chosen to take part in the séance.

Here it was attempted to make direct communication with spirit through the participants’ psyches or ‘higher selves’. Instead of deciphering feelings from spirit, questions were asked.  A protection ritual was led by the team leader, which sought to protect the participants with a white light. This meditation was used more to get the participants into the correct mindset for connecting with spirit, though it also sought to create a psychic protection barrier.

The participants were asked to keep an open stance, with legs uncrossed, feet on the floor and a finger always on the planchette. This was done in order to keep spirit energy flowing and to align chakras. Crossing legs or arms would create interference and disrupt energy flow.

According to the leader of the séance, spirit does not move the planchette, but communicates with the participants’ psyche or energy field to make them move the planchette where it wants it to go. Here spirit works with the participants’ spirits in order to physically move the planchette, as the spirit communicating has no physicality in order to do this itself.

The séance leader called for any spirit to come to the table. This could have been any spirit whatsoever, not necessarily a spirit attached to the location. It could have been a spirit connected to an individual in the room or any spirit that wished to communicate. Those spirits who did not wish to communicate were not forced to.

The details of the séance will be kept confidential at this time in order to allow further unbiased investigation. However, one event of interest occurred while speaking to a mischievous spirit. Here one member of the group had chosen to remain in the living room below. However, the mischievous spirit announced that it wished to play a game with this member of the group. A loud bang was heard from downstairs and upon checking it was found that a change in air pressure in the living room, due to the heat from the log fire, had caused a door to slam loudly on its own. Could this have been due to a mischievous spirit playing a prank on the individual in the room, or merely natural causes?

Those individuals who participated in the séance had minimal experience of using a planchette and were sceptical of such methods. It was clear that quietly all individuals at the table had been conducting their own experiments to catch out fakery. However, all individuals came away from the séance saying that if someone was controlling the planchette it was very cleverly done as it was almost impossible to push the planchette in a controlled way. Seemingly the planchette moved where the spirit in communication desired it. All in all it was a very interesting experience, worthy of further experimentation and research.
